Hereford Hospital – Bereavement Suite
Sometimes we are asked to work on projects that make a real difference for people in the toughest of times. Our work with Hereford County Hospital on their new bereavement suite is certainly one of those projects.
After a fundraising appeal donated a significant amount of money to the hospital in order to create a dedicated space for bereaved families, we were asked to help with the room’s lighting. By putting all of our talents to good use, we hoped to provide a little extra comfort for families who really need it.
Unfortunately for a number of families, Hereford County Hospital has not always had a dedicated space for bereaved parents and other family members to stay. Thanks to the Born Sleeping campaign run by the Wye Valley NHS Trust, and dedicated fundraisers such as Laura Culpin, the hospital received over £100,000 to change this. Goodridge Electrical Contractors Ltd would need to design and fit the room’s lighting, and install ventilation into a new en-suite for this overnight room.
While working in the maternity ward, we would also need to carry out additional work refurbishing one of the hospital’s maternity rooms, in order to create a warmer, more relaxing environment for new and expectant mothers.
As with all projects we undertake for hospitals and NHS locations, the work would need to be completed quickly, safely, and without disruption to the ward’s day-to-day running.
Working closely with the hospital’s staff, we arranged times to work which would cause the minimum amount of disruption to both them, and the families on the maternity ward.
After setting a carefully-planned timetable, we started work on the bereavement suite, creating a comfortable, warm overnight room complete with a private en-suite bathroom. We installed dimmable lighting to allow patients control over their surroundings, and fitted new ventilation into the en-suite.
We also installed a new lighting system into the refurbished maternity room, including “hidden” fibre-optic lighting. When not in use, this lighting looks like a normal ceiling. However, once it’s turned on, it creates a relaxing “starlight” pattern to produce a calming effect for mothers, babies and other family members.
